Weblogs

Weblogs, or blogs are most usually a personal diary, a collaborative space or an insider news outlet. In simple terms, a Weblog, or blog is a web site, where a person writes (normally) short pieces on an ongoing basis. However, blogs are very flexible, there are millions of them, in all shapes and sizes, and there are no real rules.

Professional and amateur journalists use blogs to publish breaking news, while others keep personal journals that reveal inner thoughts. Comments allow readers to offer feedback each new entry. The author can choose whether or not allow comments, and can delete any comments that are inappropriate.

In educational terms, blogging has many potential uses, these include the following:

  • Blogs can be used to organize thoughts. They can promote reflexivity, allowing students to reflect on their own experiences and learn from them.

  • Group blogs with multiple authors make excellent communication tools for small teams and group work outside the classroom.

  • Blogs can actively promote online discussion and collaboration more effectively than discussion groups. Discussion groups can be impersonal. Because a blog is 'owned' by its author, it promotes more personal communication and networking.
